At Bardee, our ambition is to reshape the global food system. To do this, we breed billions of insects 🐛 to transform food waste 🥗  into insect protein for animal feed 🐶  and fertiliser 🌲  in our world-leading vertical farming system ~ learn more about what we do here.

In 2022, we aim to divert 20,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill, and 10x our production volumes of insect protein and fertiliser going into sustainable animal feed and fertiliser products.

Bardee is now looking for a Strategic Insights Lead to take our data-driven decision making to the next level.

Outcomes & projects you’ll work on:

Outcome 1: Bardee has a clear direction, priorities, and plan, fully backed by data and unlocked by your strategic insights.

Here at Bardee, we are passionate about looking at facts and data to help us make decisions on how we win – for example, which projects we resource and why, which customers we serve, how we mould our business model to deliver the most impact, and how we resource new growth trajectories. You’ll work closely with the CEO and Head of Operations to define our strategy, build analysis and research to support it, build our seasonal plans, and resource our longer-term projects through fundraising and business development efforts.  As part of this outcome, you’ll own projects like:

• Building and maintaining core strategy and due diligence materials, including market sizing, discounted cashflow analyses, pricing analysis, and more
• Supporting the CEO in creating fundraising, tender, and business development materials to unlock new growth trajectories
• Supporting the Bardee leadership team during seasonal planning cycles to identify the commercial opportunities, science initiatives, new products, and engineering upgrades which will deliver the most value
• Conducting ad-hoc analysis and planning to support a broad range of business decisions 
• Monitoring operational data to drive insights and recommendations on how we can scale and find efficiencies

Outcome 2: Bardee’s leaders are never more than a few clicks away from understanding the core drivers of our business.

This means you’ll build accessible, easy-to-use analytical tools which unlock operational insight in our business.  You might work on projects like:

• Building quantitative tools to help leaders quickly get a sense of how new business initiatives that affect multiple parts of Bardee’s system will generate value 
• Building easy-to-use dashboards to help operational leaders understand critical business drivers like staff utilisation and line uptime
• Building fully-loaded cost models to support product and commercial strategy
• Setting up highly automated data capture systems for processes like fulfilment, dispatch, QA, equipment downtime, and safety to support additional insights and improvements

About you

To succeed in this role, you’ll be strong in:

• Analysis & research: you’ll be able to generate crisp quantitative insights around big, ambiguous, strategic problems.  You’ll have experience building models to support decision making around commercial opportunities 
• Communication: you’ll have incredibly structured, clear, and incisive verbal and written comms.  When tackling a big problem or dealing with complex concepts, you’ll break it down into easily digestible parts and move through it methodically 
• Stakeholder engagement: you’ll be comfortable working with leaders across a wide range of disciplines, and proactively pull in help and feedback where required

Opportunities for growth at Bardee

In just 3 years since it started, Bardee has grown from a tent-sized experiment to Australia’s biggest producer of Black Soldier Fly Larvae-based protein and fertiliser products, commanding a facility able to process 10 tonnes of food waste daily and with plans for more. We now work with and supply some of Australia’s largest waste, logistics, pet food and grocery businesses and have no signs of slowing down.

On top of growing with the business, this is a perfect opportunity for someone with 2-4 years’ work experience to transition to a senior leadership role in a startup.  You’ll report to the Head of Operations and have direct exposure to the CEO, CTO, and Head of Commercial.

Depending on your experience and where you want to grow, this role has the potential to grow into:

• Operations and Expansion Manager, leading a broad portfolio of operational improvement projects and leading expansion across multiple sites
• Insights/ Business Intelligence Manager, where you could define and build the insights function at Bardee working closely with the Operations and Finance functions 
• Head of Strategy, where you’ll work closely with the CEO and leadership team to define how we win and build our new growth trajectories

What you might hate working at Bardee:

We’re a small startup. We’re a small team that just scaled to 20+ FTE. We’ve never done this before and will be making lots of mistakes along the way.

We won’t handhold you. You’ll be accountable to deliver your goals safely and efficiently. 

We are comfortable with change. Things move quickly at Bardee, so you can expect to find things out last minute. We’ll be coming up with things on the fly, and not everything will work out.

Sometimes sustainability smells. We work with food waste so you’ll want to take a shower when you get home.

Weekend operations. Our insects are too busy growing and don’t know when it’s the weekend, so some operations extend into Saturday.

We’re all-in. Sometimes things go wrong and we have a culture where everyone, no matter their job description, everyone jumps in to help out.
